EFFECT OF WASTE MANAGEMENT ON ECONOMY

EFFECT OF WASTE MANAGEMENT ON ECONOMY Waste is part of the economy – it is a by-product of economic activity, by businesses, government and households. Waste is also an input to economic activity – whether through material or energy recovery. The management of that waste1 has economic implications – for productivity, government expenditure, and, of course, the environment. Firms’ decisions over how to manage waste impact on their profitability. Where the benefits outweigh the costs, firms can reduce their overall costs2 and improve productivity by reducing the use of expensive raw materials, whether metal in industry, or paper in commerce. Equally, costs can be reduced by optimising the management of waste which arises. The decisions of consumers in demanding goods and services which lead to waste impact not only on the environment, but also on the level of government spending required by local authorities to collect and manage household waste. As well as the economy-wide impacts...

DISPOSAL OF HOUSEHOLD WASTE

As we are advancing towards the era where there are more facilities available at cheaper price, our household usage is also increasing and with that we have increase of household waste. It was not an issue at the time when the quantity of waste was less as disposal was easy and was not having toxic effects on our environment at a huge extent. But now as I stated before, the has increased in a tremendous manner which is now adversely affecting our mother nature. So, there should be optimal ways of disposal of household wastes. Now to do so first of all let us know the types of the wastes that exists and needs to be disposed. The necessary wastes are: 1. Residual waste 2. Organic waste 3. Waste paper and cartons Residual waste Residual waste includes any substances that cannot be recycled as well as materials that do not qualify for recycling due to their level of pollution, such as:  coated or contaminated paper  light bulbs or halogen lamps  broken dishes  used cleaning rags a...

MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

CURRENT STATE AND FUTURE CHALLENGEs: Due to population growth, industrialization, urbanization and economic growth, a trend of significant increase in municipal solid waste (MSW) generation has been recorded worldwide. MSW generation, in terms of kg/capita/day, has shown a positive correlation with economic development at world scale. Due to rapid industrial growth and migration of people from villages to cities, the urban population is increasing rapidly. Waste generation has been observed to increase annually in proportion to the rise in population and urbanization. The per capita generation of MSW has also increased tremendously with improved life style and social status of the populations in urban centers  . As more land is needed for the ultimate disposal of these solid wastes, issues related to disposal have become highly challenging . India, with a population of over 1.21 billion account for 17.5% of the world population (Census of India 2011). According to the provisional f...

ELECTRONIC WASTE MANAGEMENT

ISSUES AND STRATEGIE E-WASTE IN INDIA  As there is no separate collection of e-waste in India, there is no clear data on the quantity generated and disposed of each year and the resulting extent of environmental risk. The preferred practice to get rid of obsolete electronic items in India is to get them in exchange from retailers when purchasing a new item. The business sector is estimated to account for 78% of all installed computers in India (Toxics Link, 2003). Obsolete computers from the business sector are sold by auctions. Sometimes educational institutes or charitable institutions receive old computers for reuse. It is estimated that the total number of obsolete personal computers emanating each year from business and individual households in India will be around 1.38 million. According to a report of Confederation of Indian Industries, the total waste generated by obsolete or broken down electronic and electrical equipment in India has been estimated to be 1,46,000 t...

3 R's OF WASTE MANAGEMENT

I think it’s safe to say that we’ve all heard about the three R’s of waste management; reduce, reuse, and recycle. But do you know why they are in that order and what each one entails? In order to fully understand the meanings of the three R’s we need to talk about the impact solid waste has on the earth annually. For example, did you know that each year, Americans throw away 50 billion food and drink cans, 27 billion glass bottles and jars, and 65 million plastic and metal jar and can covers.    So how can we cut back on these numbers? That’s where the three R’s come in to play. REDUCE As you can likely deduce from its being the first of the three R’s, reducing is the best way to go about managing solid waste. It’s quite simple really, the less you use the less waste you will produce. This R causes the most unease in consumers because we tend to think we need to cut back on everything or we won’t be making an impact. This is not the case, though. By just doing a few th...

DISPOSAL OF WASTE MATERIAL

Would a place filled with trash and waste materials be preferable to live? Or its better to work, stay and do all the daily activities in a place with hygiene and suitable environment. Obviously we will be willing to work in a clean place. But, how and where to get such place? Nowadays, people don’t  even think where to throw the waste. Even if there may be a trash can nearby, they are least worry if it has a purpose. Pointing out this fact, waste materials if not disposed correctly can lead to epidemics. Disposal of waste materials is essential for the sanitation of city and health of citizens. First of all, let us know about what really waste is. In case of human beings, we generate garbage. All the waste in the form of  fruit and vegetable peels, used stationary, packing material, unwanted and old furniture, used plastic objects, old clothes etc. is the garbage. Now, to deal with the wastes generated by human beings it is important to know  that if any of the wa...
